Puerto Escondido is really one of the great “undiscovered” beach towns in Mexico earning distinction by the New York Times as one of the “places to go” in 2017. Located on the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is known for its fishing and laid-back surfer environment.
It has numerous famous surf beaches where you can take a lesson or just sit in your palapa and watch the waves come in on beaches such as Carrizalillo, Zicatela, and Punta Zicatela. Puerto Escondido hosts numerous international surf competitions throughout the year like the ESPN X Games and the MexPipe Challenge.
Puerto Escondido was actually first named “Bahia de la Escondida” or “Bay of the Hidden Woman” because it got its name from a Mixtec woman who was captured by the feared pirate, Andres Drake (brother of Sir Francis Drake). Drake used the bay to hide, rest, and anchor his ship. As legend has it, he captured the Mixtec woman in Huatulco and kept her in a cabin onboard. The local woman escaped her capturers and dove into the bay. She swam to shore and hid in the jungles. Drake sent a party to find her but never did. Even later, Drake would return to look for her but never found her. Bahia de la Escondida eventually became Puerto Escondido.
Puerto Escondido is also known for its diverse wildlife with freshwater lagoons in the town of Manialtepec where there is a variety of animal life. The lagoon is full of mangroves with a variety of birds such as pelicans, seagulls, ibis, storks, cranes, jacanas, buzzards, kingfishers, and swans along with a variety of animals such as raccoons, weasels, deer, wild boar, foxes, and crocodiles.

Welcome to Chef Ana´s beachfront home for February and March. The property consists of 6 guest rooms all with private baths. 5 rooms have a direct view of the ocean with a king bed or two twins (one master bedroom with a larger bath, big closet, and private balcony) and we have one bungalow room with a king or two twin beds. The bungalow does not have a direct view of the ocean but has its own kitchen and is on the main floor with the pool. Wifi is available in the house. Each room has a slightly different design and is very comfortable with beautiful bathrooms.
La Villa Bonita in Puerto Escondido is located on a privileged perch above Playa Manzanillo and Puerto Angelito in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The house has constant ocean breezes which keeps all rooms and common areas very comfortable. We are steps away from Playa Manzanillo and a 10-minute walk to Carizalillo surf beach. The kitchen is open with lots of cooking space that is perfect for Chef Ana’s communal cooking experience. The house has two pools on the main floor, an outdoor theatre, gardens and an elevated viewing area complete with grass on the top of the house.
