The Ale Summer is here!
Join Chef Ale Quiroz for a super active and fun week this summer that is anything but ordinary – including 4th of July week among others. Make craft cocktails, hike to a cave with prehistoric paintings, appreciate art in an avant-garde outdoor sculpture garden, cook out at Ale’s family home in a traditional smoke kitchen, dance to live salsa, and shop, shop, shop! That is a lot, right? Good. This week is built for active people who want to live life to the fullest in an EXTREME local experience that you simply cannot have as a mere tourist.
This is a deep dive into Tepozteco culture, history, food, music, and daily life. You will forage in the mountains, visit a nopal cactus farm, nixtamalize heirloom corn at the local mill, cook Mole Verde Tepozteco passed down through generations, and shake your way through a cocktail masterclass with mezcal, chiles, and serious fun. You will hike the Tepozteco pyramid trail, hit Ale’s personal nightlife food crawl — tacos al pastor, hochos (hot dogs), roasted elote, mezcal flights — and end the night dancing rumba and salsa at El Telón where the music does not stop.
Many of those who have joined us before already know Ale — her energy is contagious, her humor is quick, and her enthusiasm for this place and its food is completely genuine. What you may not know is that behind all that fun is a seriously trained fine dining chef who has worked in some of the most highly regarded restaurants in Mexico. She brings that level of skill and precision into everything she cooks, and then serves it to you with a huge smile and probably a mezcalita.
Ale is more than a local. She is a part of the roots of this society in the most literal sense. Her grandfather was the well-loved mayor of Tepoztlán. Her grandmother started the first school for local children in the shade of the Ex-Convent. Her father was the first doctor to open his practice in town. This family did not just live in Tepoztlán — they helped build it. No one knows Tepoz like Ale. She will show you the cool side of this mountain town like no one else — the side that belongs to the people who actually live here.
As one who has been to Tepozlan several times I thought I knew the place but Ale showed us a side of the town that only a local would know. Her experience in the culinary arts was obvious. She was organized, well prepared and explained each step clearly. She could be working in a fancy restaurant anywhere but choses to work in her beloved town. And she made it so much fun!! The cocktails, dancing and hiking were all great! Ale is a gem!!
